About Acetonitrile

Acetonitrile is the chemical compound with the formula CH3CN. It is an aliphatic nitrile and a volatile organic compound. Acetonitrile is produced as coproduct in the production of acrylonitrile by propylene ammoxidation – Sohio Process.

Acetonitrile is used mainly as a solvent in the purification of butadiene in refineries. In the extraction process of hydrocarbons, acetonitrile is used as a solvent. Industrially, it is used as a solvent for the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and photographic film. Acetonitrile is used to make pharmaceuticals, perfumes, rubber products, pesticides, acrylic nail removers and batteries.
